By Nicole Graham on September 10, 2012

Not everyone will like you, and you surely will not fancy everyone you meet either. These facts you will find true in business- and in life. Whether in school, in the work place, or dealing with your brother’s new girlfriend, conflicting personalities are everywhere. If you want to succeed and enjoy yourself, learning how to effectively deal with personality differences is crucial. As a student and an employee, I have come to realize that avoidance only goes so far. If I wish to excel in my workplace or in my classes, I have to learn how to conduct myself amongst a diverse crowd.

Here are a few tips to get you started:

  1. Remain neutral.  It is incredibly easy to find yourself caught up in gossip or criticism, especially at school or in the workplace,. Do what you can to stay out of it. This will allow you to stay objective and remain in pleasant standing with those around you.
  2. Don’t take it personally. Some people just carry around a grudge or seem like they have a negative attitude. It is not your fault and you should not take any blame upon yourself. Keep in mind that all people have some sort of stress in their lives. Some project it onto others without knowing it. Attempt to stay positive even when the other person cannot seem to do so.
  3. Keep an open mind. There are those that will push your buttons, but they might have something valuable to offer. Keep your mind and ears open. Opportunities arise when they are least expected.
  4. Be conscientious. Remember that there are different personality types and they will clash with your own personality on occasion. Do your best to adjust to each one. Some people are ego-centered while others are shy. Some people are deadline oriented and organized while others work in perceived disarray.

It will benefit you to learn about the different types of personalities and how to cope with each one individually. You can learn about the four major archetypes and how to approach each one of them here.
