The 2014 Emmys Best And Worst Dressed

By Kristen Peuvion on August 30, 2014

Award show season is upon us and it has started up in full swing.

This past week gave us MTV’s Video Music Awards, and most recently, the Emmys. This particular awards show honors the best actors, actresses and shows of US primetime television.

Year after year we see some surprises in terms of winners. In fact, this year’s big winner shocker was “Sherlock.” One thing that isn’t a surprise every year, though, is the show-stopping fashion.

Actors, actresses, producers and directors put their best foot forward and dress to the nines for the Emmys, but like any awards show, there were some misses. Check out some of this year’s Emmys best and worst dressed stars!

The Best

Kerry Washington

Kerry Washington is always looking super chic, so her Emmys dress of course enforces her fabulous style! She showed up to this year’s awards in a Prada dress in a brilliant shade of orange.

Orange isn’t usually people’s go to color for the red carpet because it can be risky, but for “Scandal’s” leading lady it totally worked. Not only was the pop of color a chic move, but the slit with the shorter black insert made it even better.

Some people think the sequin details made the dress a bit tacky, but combined with her messy, sexy loose waves, they worked together to make the look young and fresh, not cheap. The overall look was another hit to add to Kerry Washington’s list of gorgeous ensembles.

Matthew McConaughey & Camila Alves

This couple is drop dead gorgeous in anything they wear. They could be wearing a plastic garbage bag down the red carpet and still not top the worst dressed list.

But despite that, their outfits killed it at this year’s Emmys. McConaughey was wearing an all blue Dolce and Gabbana suit tuxedo. While most people go for classic black, he opted for a more exciting shade.

Alves, on the other hand, wore a beautiful all-white Zuhair Murad lace dress. The lace was sexy, yet tasteful in that it didn’t show too much skin. The fitted mermaid style of the dress was also super sexy and showed off her well-toned body flawlessly.

Not only do the two of them look good on their own, but the blue tux and white dress just put their looks over the top. This couple definitely deserve a place on the 2014 Emmys best dressed list.

Sarah Hyland

Sarah Hyland was one of the younger stars on the Emmys red carpet, but don’t let her young age fool you. This girl looked just as fabulous as the veterans. She took a risk by trying a crop top.

Crop tops are very trendy right now, but trendy doesn’t necessarily mean it’s appropriate for a red carpet. Surprisingly though, Hyland made it work. She paired a tailored white crop top with a full, floor length coral skirt all designed by Christian Siriano. The outfit looked great on her and was more age appropriate than a gown.

The Worst

Sarah Paulson

Sarah Paulson showed up at this year’s Emmys in a red and black Armani Prive gown that definitely turned a lot of heads. This gown was full of tulle and red balls all over and was absolutely atrocious. Many stars try to take risks on the red carpet, but this risk just didn’t work out for her.

Jennifer Westfeldt

Another outfit that just didn’t work was Jennifer Westfeldt’s gown. She chose a royal purple gown with gold embroidery around the bust line.

While the overall color and detailing of the gown were gorgeous, the cut of the dress just didn’t work. It was a full length gown, but the front part of the bottom was a midi-length skirt, while the back bottom of it remained full length. I’m all for showcasing your shoes, but why not stick to one single hemline?

Lena Dunham

Lena Dunham has topped a couple of worst dressed lists in the past, so it’s not all that surprising to see her here once again. Her Emmys dress this past week was a definite miss. She showed up in a full length, poufy tulle skirt in an ombre pink with a baby pink satin, short sleeved blouse.

Not only was this outfit unflattering, but it didn’t seem to fit her personal style. Had she stuck with something that was more her style, the outcome might have been more flattering and she wouldn’t have landed herself on the worst dressed list.

So while we celebrated primetime television’s best at this year’s Emmys, that was not the only thing–the Emmys gave us a chance to see Hollywood’s stars all dressed up.

Like any awards show, some succeeded at this year’s show and others failed and this was a just a short list of some of those stars.
